About our bishop

Msgr. Philippe Jourdan

Bishop Philippe Jourdan was born in 1960 in Dax, France. He first studied engineering in Paris and later continued his studies in Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in philosophy. He was ordained a priest in 1988, and in 1996 he came to Estonia to serve the local Catholic community at a time when the Church was just recovering after the Soviet occupation.

During Bishop Philippe’s many years of service, the Catholic Church in Estonia has grown significantly. In 2005, Pope John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Estonia and bishop, and in 2024, Pope Francis elevated the Apostolic Administration of Estonia to the Diocese of Tallinn.

Bishop Philippe considers it important that the Church be a place where people can encounter God, find hope, and grow in faith. He has emphasized living the Christian life through everyday actions and has highlighted the importance of unity among Christians and care within society.

"The Church is not primarily an institution, but a living community where people encounter God and one another."

— Bishop Philippe Jourdan
