May 30th. Way of Light on bicycles — when the joy of the Resurrection rolls along the roads!

The Resurrection is not only a time of greatest hope, but also a period of light and contagious joy. During Lent, we walk with Christ on His Way of the Cross, sharing in His suffering; during the Resurrection season, our calling is to walk with Him on the Way of Light (Via Lucis) — the way of life, the path of victory and light. This fairly new liturgical practice (born in the 20th century) has in many places around the world become an important part of the experience of the Resurrection.

In its structure, the Way of Light follows the example of the Way of the Cross: it also consists of fourteen stations, but it focuses not on Christ’s suffering, but on His Resurrection — His encounters with the disciples, the forgiveness of Peter, the faith of Thomas, the Ascension. This service fills the heart with light and teaches us to look at life not through fear and pain, but through the prism of Christ’s victory and love.

For several years in a row, the Way of Light in Estonia has taken on a special form — by bicycle. We make Via Lucis a living pilgrimage — a joyful journey filled with nature and communion. For true joy never stands still!

How does it happen?

On Saturday, 30 May, after Mass we will get into the saddle and begin the journey. About 100 kilometers lie ahead. Don’t worry! This is not a race or a marathon, but a pilgrimage — with stops, rest breaks, conversations, and mutual support. If a participant is unable to complete the whole route, they can return earlier by train.

There are 14 stops along the way, each focusing on one event of the Resurrection. At each stop we read the Gospel and a short reflection. Then we ride on in silence — for a few minutes, so that what we have heard may echo in the heart. And then one may sing, converse, or simply roll on quietly. All of this is part of the prayer.

This is not just a bike ride. It is a celebration of faith, movement, and friendship.

Each year the route passes through beautiful places: spring fields, forests, lakes. Nature seems to rejoice with us. We stop to rest, for snacks, small picnics, games, or heartfelt conversations. The whole day unfolds in the spirit of the Gospel: joy, communion, simplicity. It feels as if the road itself becomes a parable of the Resurrection.

If the journey becomes difficult for someone or the full distance feels too long — no worries! A large part of the route runs near the railway, so it is always possible to board a train and return home, having covered at least part of the Way of Light.

For whom?

For everyone who wants not only to hear about the Resurrection, but also to live it. For those who love prayer, nature, song, the spring wind, and people. For families and young people, the elderly and those on their own — for everyone who wants to walk with Christ not only in church, but also along a field road, a forest path, by a roadside cross, or at a bicycle stop under birches.

So… pump up the tires, check the brakes, take a thermos with you — and off we go, onto the Way of Light!

May this day be not just a ride, but a true experience of the Resurrection in motion.

May every pedal stroke be a reminder: Christ is truly risen!

And now we ride together with Him — along the Way of Light, toward life.

See you at the start!
