Regarding the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX), it reiterates what has already been stated previously: the episcopal consecrations announced by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X lack the required pontifical mandate. This constitutes a “schismatic act” (John Paul II, Ecclesia Dei, no. 3), and “formal adherence to the schism is a grave offense against God and entails the excommunication established by Church law” (ibid., 5c; cf. Explanatory Note of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, 24 August 1996). The Holy Father continues to ask in his prayers for the light of the Holy Spirit for those responsible in the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X, that they may retract the extremely grave decisions they have made.
