Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

           

            I am very pleased to inform you that Pope Francis has decided to elevate Apostolic Administration of Estonia to the Diocese of Tallinn, and to appoint me, a bishop of new diocese, Bishop of Tallinn.

            This change marks a turning point in the history of the Catholic Church of Estonia. The Apostolic Administration of Estonia was essentially a transitional institution,  created by the Holy See 100 years ago in 1924.  The Estonian state was then very young and had only six years old and the Catholic community in Estonia was quite small. In these circumstances, the restoration of church life as an independent ecclesiastical structure was undoubtedly a great sign of faith and trust on the part of Pope Pius XI, and its temporary status was chosen - Apostolic Administration - an institution to be used in a region where the Church was just beginning its work. 

We announce  of the visit of His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the UGCC to  Estonia. There will be followings events where we kindly to ask to participate and create atmosphere of prayer: 

September 21, Saturday

  • 11:00 Mass with Bishop Philippe Jourdan at the Roman Catholic Cathedral on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Apostolic Administration in Estonia, at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Cathedral, 18 Vene Street
  • 12:30 Ecumenical prayer with the Estonian Council of Churches, at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Cathedral, 18 Vene Street
  • 18:00 Vespers at the Church of the Mother of God of the Three Hands, UGCC, 22 Laboratooriumi Street

  • 14:00 Divine Liturgy led by His Beatitude Sviatoslav, co-celebrated by Bishop Stepan Sus and Bishop Philippe Jourdan at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Cathedral, 18 Vene Street 

  

A statement on Monday released by the Holy See Press Office said Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Titular Archbishop of Urbisaglia, and Prefect Emeritus of the Papal Household, as Apostolic Nuncio to Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia.

Archbishop Gänswein, who is 67, served as Pope Benedict XVI’s private secretary during his entire pontificate and retirement.

In December 2012, Pope Benedict XVI also appointed him Prefect of the Pontifical Household. He was ordained as archbishop in January 2013.

He continued to hold both positions after Benedict resigned from the papacy about seven weeks later, in February 2013. For about seven years, Archbishop Gänswein served both Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict.

Until last year, the Apostolic Nuncio in the three Baltic countries was Archbishop Petar Rajič, a Canadian of Bosnian-Croatian origin, who was appointed by the Holy Father, on March 11, as the Nuncio to Italy and San Marino. Consequently, the Apostolic See has remained vacant until now.

SPES NON CONFUNDIT. “Hope does not disappoint” (Rom 5:5). In the spirit of hope, the Apostle Paul addressed these words of encouragement to the Christian community of Rome. Hope is also the central message of the coming Jubilee that, in accordance with an ancient tradition, the Pope proclaims every twenty-five years. My thoughts turn to all those pilgrims of hope who will travel to Rome in order to experience the Holy Year and to all those others who, though unable to visit the City of the Apostles Peter and Paul, will celebrate it in their local Churches. For everyone, may the Jubilee be a moment of genuine, personal encounter with the Lord Jesus, the “door” (cf. Jn 10:7.9) of our salvation, whom the Church is charged to proclaim always, everywhere and to all as “our hope” (1 Tim 1:1).

Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come, despite our not knowing what the future may bring. Even so, uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future, as if nothing could possibly bring them happiness. For all of us, may the Jubilee be an opportunity to be renewed in hope. God’s word helps us find reasons for that hope. Taking it as our guide, let us return to the message that the Apostle Paul wished to communicate to the Christians of Rome.

The Estonian Apostolic Administration celebrates its 100th anniversary. The institution was founded in 1924, 1 November. The anniversary mass will take place on 3 November 2024 at 12.00 in Tallinn's Peter and Paul Cathedral. Save the date! And pray for the Church of Estonia.

In Sts. Peter and Paul parish:
- Mass in English (Sunday vigil Mass), every Saturday at 6 pm.
- The first Saturday of the month. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed, and we’ll pray the Rosary together. Make it a monthly date with the Lord! 
We also have Adoration every Wednesday after evening mass around 18.30 in Estonian.
